Frequently Asked Questions

Is the course hard?

No, learning to dive with Adventure Scuba and PADI is easy, fun and will make you a better and safer diver.

Do I have to be a good swimmer?

No, with the use of buoyancy compensators (the jacket) and other modern equipment, even marginal swimmers can scuba dive safely. You need to be comfortable in the water and demonstrate basic swimming ability. specifically you’ll need to swim 300 yards with your mask, snorkel and fins and you beed to be able to stay a float or tread water for 10 minutes.

Is Diving expensive?

No, once you get certified and have your own equipment there are no tees times or lift tickets to buy. Active divers usually spend less on their sport then the average golfer or mountain biker. Compared with getting started in other popular adventure sports and outdoor activities learning to dive isn’t expensive. For example, you can expect to pay about the same or less as you would for:

  • A day with the family at Comerica Park
  • A weekend of rock climbing lessons
  • A weekend of kayaking lessons
  • A weekend of fly-fishing lessons
  • One great night out at the bar
  • About three hours of private golf lessons
What do gear do I need to start the class?

Choosing and using your gear is part of the fun of diving. Adventure Scuba will help you find the right equipment. Each piece of equipment performs a different function so that collectively, it adapts you to the underwater world. As a minimum, you want your own mask, fins and snorkel when you start diving. Adventure Scuba will help you choose gear that has the fit and features best suited for you. When you sign up for an Open Water class with Adventure Scuba we give you a coupon towards the purshase of this important gear.

Adventure Scuba will include the rest of your gear as part of your Open Water course. The equipment provided for your Open Water certification dives will vary depending on where you do your certification dives. We recommend that you invest in your own equipment when you start your course because:

  • Having your own gear is part of being a diver.
  • You’ll be more comfortable using gear that is fitted for you.
  • Divers that have their own gear – dive more
